This second book in the Iron Seas series focused on Captain Yasmeen and Archimedes Fox. This book had a different feel than the first book and was more detailed in the history and politics of the world of this series (There where moments I had to stop and think about who was on what side of a conflict and how this related to the present storyline). Overall I found it enjoyable and I was able to feel connected to the characters.
I liked the interactions between the two main characters and I found the build up of the relationship to be at a pace that fit the storyline and personality of the characters. The adventures were fun. There was one scene that made me question the way the zombie infection is spread. The violence may bother some but it fits with the mercenary/pirate/adventurer/political upheaval of the books.
The Steampunk theme to these stories gives it a different flavor. It is gritty, industrial, mechanical, fantastic. The creatures and machines that are created within this world remind me of Jules Verne.
I do appreciate that this series has had happy endings. It definitely is something that I look for in these books even if they have a darker tone to the overall story.
